WireGuard is a project, protocol, and suite of open source software that allows users to create secure network tunnels and virtual private networks (VPNs) over an encrypted connection. WireGuard is the most secure and performant VPN protocol, leading in terms of readability, usability, and cryptographic assurance. It is also extremely flexible and can be used in a wide range of operating systems. WireGuard has been tightly integrated into the core of several operating systems, including Linux and OpenBSD, and it can also be used on Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and FreeBSD.
Why is this important?
VPNs are a key feature of the IT security landscape. They protect against attacks and surveillance, and allow organizations to provide virtual networks for their employees, which is crucial for remote work. There are many VPNs available, so secure and verifiable options are very important. WireGuard’s entry into the open VPN protocol market created new standards and fundamentally transformed VPN usage by integrating them into the core of the Linux operating system.
WireGuard is promising technology that benefits users across all widely-deployed operating systems. It is increasingly important for businesses and governments that rely on open source and Linux. Its maintenance, servicing and further development are therefore critical.
What are we funding?
WireGuard will be further developed to improve its integration on several operating systems and platforms. Urgent maintenance work on the Linux Random Number Generator (which underlies many key cryptographic processes) will also be carried out. Many other projects will benefit from WireGuard’s development.
